Transport Canada began a Marine Policy and Divestiture Program
in the mid 1990's. Through this program, authority and
responsibility for ports across the nation were being
transferred to local interests.
In the
Strait Area, the divestiture was recognized as an economic
opportunity for the community and in 1996 the Strait of Canso
Superport Corporation Limited (also known as the Strait
Superport) was formed. A volunteer Board of Directors
representing various stakeholders in the Strait of Canso regions
governs the Corporation.
In
2000, the Strait Superport acquired the Mulgrave Marine Terminal
and the Port Hawkesbury Pier. Since the acquisition, the Strait
Superport has continually grown. Both wharves underwent
reconstruction and a warehousing facility was constructed at the
Mulgrave Marine Terminal.
The
Strait Superport continues to look for ways to expand and to
enhance the economic value of the ports to the community.
