The Strait of Canso is located between mainland Nova Scotia and Cape Breton Island. It is one of the finest natural deep water harbours on the Eastern Seaboard of North America. The Strait is 30 kilometres long and has widths and depths up to 2 kilometres and 27 metres respectively.

The Canso Causeway, built in the mid 1950's, is a permanent link between Cape Breton and mainland Nova Scotia. It forms the northern boundary of the Strait Superport and ensures that the port, on the south side, remains ice-free year round.

The communities of Mulgrave, Port Hawkesbury and Point Tupper are located along the shores of the Strait. They are home to the industries that operate on the Strait Superport.
